Down Syndrome & Genetic Conditions

Children with Down syndrome and other genetic conditions follow their own timeline — and physiotherapy helps them make the most of it. We focus on building strength in low-tone little bodies, protecting joints, and celebrating every milestone, whenever it comes.

Signs parents notice

Sound familiar?

Low muscle tone making movement effortful
Delayed sitting, crawling or walking (typical with Down syndrome — and very responsive to therapy)
Loose, very flexible joints needing protection during movement
A genetic diagnosis where the care team recommends physiotherapy

One tick is enough of a reason to ask. Two or more — book a check.

How we help

  • Milestone-focused therapy adjusted to your child's own pace
  • Strengthening that respects hypermobile joints (and watches knees, hips and feet)
  • Gait and posture work as walking develops
  • Coordination with your child's occupational and speech therapists
  • Long-term, low-pressure plans — this is a marathon and we run it with you

What a session looks like

  • 1Play-first sessions built around what motivates your child
  • 2Lots of repetition, celebration and patience
  • 3Home program designed to fit family life, not take it over

Common questions

When should a baby with Down syndrome start physiotherapy?
Early — in the first months of life. Early strengthening and positioning meaningfully improve milestone timing and movement quality.
Do you treat conditions other than Down syndrome?
Yes — including spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, SMA and rarer syndromes, working alongside your child's specialists for supportive, goal-based therapy.
